There’s Nothing Called 3D. It’s An Illusion!

3D movies are the latest rage these days. But did you know, 3D is nothing but an optical illusion. If human eyes could recognise 3D naturally, then 3D movies would have never been made!

Now a days, most of the movies are being released in two versions–2D and 3D. But how is 3D actually different from a normal 2D version? We expect to see characters in space or an apparent depth in the image of a 3D movie. But we can still find depth in 2D movies, right?

Considering the fact that we see things in three dimensions–height, width and depth, through the naked eye, our eyes can see only two dimensions of an object in reality. To see things in 3D, we have to create an optical illusion of depth. If human eyes could recognise 3D naturally, then 3D movies would have never been made!

While viewing a 3D movie, just take out the glasses and stare at the screen. You will see everything hazy but if you look closely you will get to see two images superimposed with a minute distance lag. Our eyes can focus on one particular object at a particular time. 3D is best understood when we can focus on the relative motion in the backdrop along with a static object in front, that gives an impression of depth.

To create the most simplistic 3D image, project two similar images shot from different angles simultaneously on the screen. An optical illusion will be created and you will find the object in space as imagined! Though the technique needs a lot of hard work and know-how, we are actually viewing an illusion.
